What are the several large yellowish green areas of grass in my yard?

Is it simply a different strain of grass, areas that have more moisture, fungus, or insects. The areas range from one foot to twelve feet in diameter and have appear several years in a row now. Most areas, but not all are in shade. I have over seeded lawn every year with a variety of grass seeds. Areas seems to die out that have this yellowish green color. I do fertilize multiple times during year and have clay mixed soil.

Dig up a shovelful of soil in one of the yellow patches and look for white grubs. They are the larva of several types of beetles and feed on the grass roots. They are about an inch long, usually curled up and are easy to see. There are several chemical controls as well as a natural control called milky spore that can be used on them, although milky spore takes a couple of years or more to completely eliminate them.
